I'm sure you are right, that email is easier - yours made me tear up a little because as I read it I was holding my son in my arms - something I wasn't sure would happen!
IM (I know you don't need his name, but we are proud of it), was born on May 25, 2012. He is a boy and a singleton. He was born five weeks early at 4lbs, 6oz and 17in long. He was delivered via c-section due to breech presentation and purposefully five weeks early due to my preeclampsia and a "mature" placenta (causing IUGR). IM spent 12 days in the NICU - only to maintain temperature and gain weight, no respiratory problems or illness.
A strange thing happened during the c-section: the dr asked (while she was sewing me up) if we had ever thought we were having twins (maybe not the best time to ask us that!) as a result of transferring two embryos, I answered no and explained that we had a sonogram at 6wks 2days and there was only one. She had asked because IM's placenta was heart shaped and double lobed (another cause of the IUGR, I believe).
THIS is a link to a blog post with now&then photos. While IM was born at 4lbs, 6oz, he was up to 9lbs, 6oz at eight weeks old, along with a five inch length gain. Which leads me to believe that our dr made a good decision in taking him early, as he grew much better and faster outside.

What a little miracle you have there. I am so happy for you! Thanks for your details and congratulations. I can only imagine how difficult those first few weeks were for your family, but he is growing and doing well now….so wonderful. Very interesting about the placenta. I had a similar experience with my last son. We thought he was a singleton and found at birth that he most likely had been a twin. You have very mixed feelings at that time.
